Living with Cat Allergies

Do you love cats but are allergic to them? Well you are not alone. Past statistics have shown that well over ten million people in the United States are allergic to cats. Just because you are allergic to your cat doesn't necessarily mean that you have to get rid of him or her. Many people are able to keep their beloved pets even though they are allergic. It's just a matter of how severe your allergy is. If you would like more information about cat allergies, read on.

Many people wonder what part of the cat makes their allergies act up. Well, the biggest cause is the cat dander. Dander is dust produced by the cat's body and is in basically just dead skin. When the dander flies in the air it can land on our skin and sometimes cause irritation. Sometimes it can get into your immune system and cause allergic reactions.

Cats possess allergens that are distributed throughout their urine, saliva and blood and these things can be found throughout a cat owner's home. Since cats are constantly grooming themselves they are spreading their dander and allergens into the atmosphere. No amount of bathing, grooming or house cleaning on your part can prevent these danders and allergens from existing in your home.

Each person reacts differently to the cat allergens. Not every one experiences the same types of symptoms. Common reactions or symptoms may include sneezing, itching, watery eyes and problems breathing. Unfortunately some people are deathly allergic to cats and need them to avoid them at all costs. For others, their symptoms can be controlled with medication. Common ways to control allergies are either by taking antihistamines or decongestants. For some people, this is not enough and they need to also take shots to help control their allergies.

Sometimes if you find that your allergies are severe and even life threatening, you need to avoid cats altogether. Some people might not even begin developing an allergy to cats until later on in their life and will sadly find themselves having to get rid of their pets that they have loved for years.
